The Humane Society of Sedona

Check out Sedona's new state of the art Humane Society building at 2115 Shelby Drive or at www.humanesocietyofsedona.com.  It's beautiful, but more important it provides temporary shelter of the highest quality for homeless dogs, cats and other critters.

On vacation?  Stop by for a visit.  You never know, you may find your soul mate behind these walls.

The Humane Society of Sedona is committed to actively helping animals in our community and to cultivating the same commitment in others.

Their primary goals are to:

  • Achieve a safe and caring environment for every animal. heighten awareness of the value of animals in peoples' lives. provide a safe and caring temporary shelter for animals in need. ensure the highest level of health and safety for both humans and animals. foster and maintain relationships among organizations and individuals concerned with animal welfare.
  • Generate the resources necessary to accomplish these goals.

The Humane Society of Sedona was formed in the 1950's by a group of citizens who were concerned with the growing number of homeless dogs and cats. On July 31, 1966 the Society was incorporated as "Paw Prints, Humane Society of Sedona, Inc.", a private, non-profit corporation. The original shelter was located on state land until 1984 when land was purchased on Shelby.  The new building, completed in 2008, is in the same location.  The planning and construction was quite the project.  But, it was worth it!

"I've visited the new shelter and WOW, my dog and cat friends are really lucky.  They've got great diggs until they find the right home.  The shelter people give them gobs of love and attention.  Sometimes it's been a ruff road for these guys and it sure makes a dog feel good knowing his buddies have a safe and happy place until they find people of their own."  Q-dog

Ways to Help Sedona Dog and Cats

The Humane Society of Sedona defines itself as an organization committed to both protecting and advocating for all
animals, and seeks to respond creatively, quickly and realistically to new challenges facing animals in society as well as in the wild. The shelter has an open-door policy and no animal is refused.  Because of this enormous responsibility ...

Money is always good. When you donate to the Humane Society of Sedona you can see where your money is going.  The well-run shelter requires the basics such as a dependable budget for food, utilities, maintenance, veterinary care, training and wages for staff to allow them to be happy and able to provide quality care for the animals.  Then there are all those everyday surprises along with the cost of the new building.  It takes alot money, time, and devotion but it is worth every bit required to properly care for those who are dependent and need a temporary home.  It doesn't matter where you live, become a member today, make a donation, or honor a beloved with a memorial or tribute gift.

If you become a member and thereby financially supporting the efforts of the Sedona Humane Society, sedonacomdogandcat.com thanks you for your generous gift to the animals of Sedona.

"We have a very diverse program for volunteers at the Humane Society of Sedona. You may work directly with the animals in the shelter, or you may concentrate your efforts on office work, fund raisers and other events. You may also work independently by collecting and turning in donations of food or money. No matter how busy your schedule is, there is something for everyone!"  Jacquie Randall

Lost Pets

What to do if you live here or are visiting and your pet decides to take a walk-about without you?  Don't panic, there are lots of things you can do and lots of resources available to help you.  The Humane Society Shelter and law enforcement professionals are there to help.  You can also find skilled dowsers, pet intuitives and communicators who can assist you in locating your pet.

Some important tips to help you find your beloved pet at home and when you travel.

  • If you are visiting Sedona or the Verde Valley, report your lost friend to your hotel staff, campground host, U. S. Forest Service, State Parks, anywhere you recently visited with your pet or nearby when last seen.  Pets can wander far very quickly, so give fliers with a color photograph and description of your pet to those organizations within 50 miles of your home. Visit or contact these organizations as much as possible.
  • Go to the local shelter in person and bring a color photo if possible. Fill out a lost pet report. All strays are held a minimum of 96 hours at the Humane Society of Sedona before being placed up for adoption. Shelters differ due to resources and philosophy on the time found dogs and cats are held before being placed for adoption.  Visit every day if possible.
  • Phone KAZM in Sedona, 928-282-4154, or your local radio station, to have your pet mentioned on their daily lost and found pet report. If they don't have a daily Lost and Found Report — make it your mission to have them start.
  • Check the "Found Pets" ads in the local newspapers, Sedona Red Rock News, the Verde Independent, and the Sedona Verde Valley Times.
  • Place "Lost Pet" ads in local newspapers in Sedona Red Rock News, the Verde Independent, and the Sedona Verde Valley Times.
  • Call all local animal control agencies, See Contact Information For Sedona Below.
  • Ask family, friends, and neighbors to help you search for your pet as soon as you realize your pet is missing.
  • Walk, bike, drive, or jog through your neighborhood every day and more than once to find your missing pet.
  • Place clothing, toys, litter box, and other items familiar to your pet outside in the yard where he/she might sense it.
  • Put signs around the neighborhood or area where your pet was last seen. Include photos and a description of your pet, your phone number and when your pet disappeared. Make sure you have an answering machine for those calls.
  • Call your veterinarian. Your pet's rabies tag number can be traced to your veterinarian.
  • Ask your mail person, newspaper delivery, and anyone who travels throughout your area regularly on business to look out for your pet.
  • If permitted, post your fliers at local businesses in your area (veterinarian clinics, gas stations, grocery stores, and community centers).
  • Talk with people who walk their dogs in your area.
  • When you find your missing friend, consider having a long talk with yourself and them about why they went missing.  Were you careless?  Acknowledge it to yourself and them and then move on.  Did they choose to wander off? Find out why.

TIP:  When creating your posters and newspaper ads, leave out one identifying feature in your pet's description, such as a splotch of color on the nose or extra toes. This protects you from pet-recovery scams and is sure-proof for verifying that someone definitely found your pet. Most importantly, don't give up hope. Remember, there are countless stories of animals that were lost for months but were eventually and happily reunited with their owners.  Taken from the Humane Society of Sedona website.

  • Place "Found Pet" ad in local newspaper.
  • Check "Lost Pet" ad in local paper.
  • Call local radio stations to place a "Found Pet" report.
  • When someone calls to say they have lost their pet and think you may have them, take caution and ask for verification of markings, habits that you have noticed, the pet's name, etc.
